The Mailani Label

Fuil Wines and multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winning musician Mailani Makainai have partnered on a special edition wine label reflecting the international musician’s tastes in wine. It a partnership built out of friendship, music, and an ancient cultural tradition.

We flew to Kaneohe, Oahu, and sat down with Mailani and her family, as well as multiple samples of wine that reflected her music and tastes in wine. In true Hawaiian fashion, it was a family event, with her parents, siblings, and even cousins chiming in.

Finally, the winner was a 2021 Sauvignon Blanc from the storied Vogelzang Vineyard in Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara. The label release will be timed to perfectly coincide with the release of her latest album,

“E kani ka pila kākou”.

BIOGRAPHY

Mailani Makaʻinaʻi is an award-winning Hawaiian singer, songwriter, and recording artist celebrated for her soulful voice, deep connection to Hawaiian culture, and powerful storytelling through music. A native of Hawaiʻi, Mailani’s artistry blends traditional Hawaiian sounds with contemporary influences, creating music that honors her roots and sharing them throughout the world.

Early Life and Background

Mailani was born and raised in Kailua, Hawaiʻi. Deeply influenced by the musical traditions and natural beauty of her homeland, she began performing at a young age. Her upbringing imprinted her with a profound respect for Hawaiian culture, language, and music, which would later define her artistic identity.

Career Highlights

Mailani first gained major recognition as one half of the acclaimed female duo Keahiwai, alongside Lei Melket. The duo’s debut album Local Girls became a major success in Hawaiʻi’s music scene, earning multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards—Hawaiʻi’s equivalent of the Grammys. Their harmonies, heartfelt lyrics, and island style resonated strongly with audiences.

After Keahiwai, Mailani launched a successful solo career. Her self-titled solo album Mailani and later works such as Manawa showcased her distinctive voice and songwriting skill. She has been recognized by the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts (HARA), including awards for Female Vocalist of the Year. Mailani continues to share Hawaiian moʻolelo(stories) and mele(songs) throughout the West Coast and Japan.

Musical Style and Themes

Mailani’s music blends traditional Hawaiian melodies, contemporary rhythms, and poetic lyricism. She often sings in both Hawaiian and English, focusing on themes of love, identity, spirituality, and aloha ʻāina (love of the land). Her performances are known to evoke deep emotional and cultural resonance.
